My Response to OffbeatBride’s Post “WTF Why photographers shouldn’t hide their nontraditional brides”

I read this post http://offbeatbride.com/2012/04/photographer-marketing a few days ago and got to say it really rubbed me the wrong way. Don’t get me wrong I love Offbeatbride.com and get AMAZING clients from them (some traditional and some non-traditional) but I often think their view on how photographers/vendors think is often wrong. Basically the article talks about how a lot of photographers don’t like to feature their Offbeat clients and even though I am sure OBB’s intentions were good, I got say I think they have this TOTALLY WRONG. Every photographer I know wants MORE offbeat clients or is dying to get into this market (I’ve even seen ads on Craigslist saying that they will shoot your Steam-punk, Rockabilly or non-traditional wedding for free!). True, there may be some that aren’t interested (and I think this is totally fine, everyone has their own personality) but just because their work doesn’t have an offbeat wedding or even as OBB pointed out “plus size brides in red or grooms in bowling shirts” doesn’t mean that the photographer wouldn’t be thrilled to shoot and feature you. The easiest thing to do would be to ask the photographer if they are interested in shooting your wedding. You can probably tell from their response if they are really interested or are just doing it for the money. The reason I am writing this is for photographers and vendors like me (and clients like you?). Offbeatbride no doubt has a strong sway on their audiences way of thinking and I feel that the post might lead brides/grooms to think that many photographers who really do want to to shoot these amazing weddings may not really want to or would “hide them.” That just simply isn’t true. There isn’t a bride or wedding I have not posted on my blog or website, the more unique or crazy the wedding the is, the more I’d love to shoot it. Like Melissa Ford said “I would feature the heck out of them” (sorry I don’t have a link to your site Melissa!) I could care less about size or whether you have a white wedding dress or not. I simply love shooting and documenting couples in love and their celebration (traditional or not). I personally do get some non traditional weddings but for those other vendors that are just hoping that you guys will contact them, I am just saying please don’t write them or me off because you don’t see someone like you on our blogs or websites. Trust me, we’d love to post your pics!
